Luke Butler (b. 1971) is a New York City native who currently lives and works in San Francisco. He received his MFA from the California College of Arts. Butler works with painting and collage, culling icons from popular culture through screen captures, found images and archived materials. Through his witty appropriations, Butler explores outmoded masculine archetypes (President Ford, Captain Kirk or Sarksy & Hutch)—that offer a subtle critique of lingering power structures and the current political climate. His work has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including at ABC No Rio, New York; Galerie Georg Kargl, Vienna, among others. He has had solo exhibitions at Second Floor Projects, San Francisco and Silverman Gallery. Butler is currently working on his upcoming solo exhibition at Kantor Gallery, Los Angeles in October 2010.
