Susanne M. Winterling (b. 1970) is a interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Berlin. She received her MFA in Meisterschulerin and is a former member of Hamburg collective Akademie Isotrop. Winterling’s site-specific interventions include photography, collage, installation, found objects as well as appropriated sound and images. Through the subtle interplay of these disparate elements, Winterling constructs emotive spaces that employ popular visual lexicons to mine questions of history and historiography. In her varied practice, she also advances abstract notions of portraiture, while exploring issues of identity construction, nationality and feminism. Winterling has held solo exhibitions in New York, Berlin, Vienna, St. Louis and San Francisco. She has also been included in numerous international exhibitions such as the Berlin Biennial 2008 at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Basel and the Kunsthalle Malmö. She recently held her first institutional solo exhibition in Germany at GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst. She is currently preparing numerous solo exhibitions, including Alliance, Sisterhood, and the Rope which will open at Hiromi Yoshii, Tokyo.
